How to Slow Down, Reconnect, and Breathe
Anxiety can feel like a constant hum in the background—or a wave that hits without warning. Racing thoughts, tension in the body, and a sense of being overwhelmed can make everyday life feel difficult to manage. But one simple, powerful practice that can help soothe anxiety is mindfulness.
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your attention to the present moment, without judgement. It doesn’t mean clearing your mind or forcing yourself to be calm—it’s about noticing what’s happening inside you, gently and with curiosity.
✨ Why Mindfulness Helps with Anxiety
Anxiety often pulls us into the future—worrying about what might happen, replaying conversations, or fearing the worst. Mindfulness brings us back to the here and now, grounding us in the body and the breath.
When we slow down and notice our thoughts and feelings rather than pushing them away, we give our nervous system a chance to settle. With regular practice, mindfulness can help you feel more in control of your responses and less overwhelmed by anxious thoughts.
🧘♀️ Try This: A Simple Grounding Exercise
Here’s a quick mindfulness practice you can do anytime you feel anxious:
The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique
Take a deep breath, and notice:
5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
This technique engages your senses and gently brings your focus back to the present moment.
🌬️ Mindful Breathing for Calm
Try placing one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Take slow, steady breaths—aiming to let your belly rise and fall gently. Even a few minutes of conscious breathing can help signal safety to your body and calm your mind.
💬 Be Kind to Yourself
Mindfulness is not about getting it “right.” Some days your mind will wander, or your anxiety might feel too strong to sit with—that’s okay. What matters is showing up with compassion and allowing yourself to be exactly where you are.
🌱 Therapy and Mindfulness
In counselling, I often use mindfulness-based techniques alongside person-centred therapy to support clients in understanding their anxiety and responding to themselves with more kindness and awareness.
If you’re struggling with anxiety and would like a calm, supportive space to work through it, I’m here to help.
